GRS Team took part last weekend in Formula Regional Middle East Championship season finale, held at Yas Marina Circuit, in Abu Dhabi. The team partnered with R&B Racing to provide an entry to Nikola Tsolov, reigning Formula 4 Spanish champion.
The Bulgarian youngster, an A14 Management -driver management agency founded by Fernando Alonso-, was making his Formula Regional debut. Tsolov shown great adaptability by having competitive mid-pack pace from the very first testing session. At the closing stages of Friday action, he was already seen in the Top 10.
Qualifying sessions took place on Saturday. The outcome, however, was not as satisfactory. Tsolov qualified on 19th and 17th position. Neither the team nor the driver gave up, and we faced the race with the goal of gaining places and obtaining experience.
The Bulgarian Lion had a stellar performance on Race 1, held at night under the lights. His pace made him capable of making up multiple positions. With some incidents happening ahead and several overtaking manoeuvres, he finished the race in ninth position. Both the team and the driver scored points on their Formula Regional Middle East debut. With that result, Tsolov secured second on the grid for Race 2.
The opening laps on Race 2 did not go as planned. Tsolov, however, regained his pace, remained consistent and secured another great result by finishing on P6, with his total score rising to 10 points. Race 3 saw Nikola once again close to the top 10, but a contact with another driver and a penalty demoted him to 15th position.
The team wraps up its Formula Regional Middle East participation. It was a positive weekend, where we had the chance to learn in a new series, and which will help us to be readier for the Formula 4 Spanish Championship and Eurocup-3 season. Now, it is time to head back to Europe and keep up the pre-season work.
