GRS gets on the Formula Winter Series podium in Valencia

Formula Winter Series Round 2 took place at our home track, at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. It was a positive weekend, where the team gave its absolute best and finished on the podium.

After a Good start to the season in Jerez, Formula Winter Series was back in action this weekend. For GRS Team, it was the home race at Circuit Ricardo Tormo, so we went on to face the weekend with extra confidence and motivation to perform well. The team came into the round with an unchanged line-up: Lia Block, Bianca Bustamante and Douwe Dedecker were our drivers. It was a weekend of constant improvement, with some uncertainty and chaos, but where the team did an outstanding job and we managed to get a great result on the final race.

Testing sessions were held throughout Thursday and Friday. They allowed us to have the cars fully fit and tuned to race, and the drivers to keep learning the track and improve their abilities. Both days went on with no incidents, and the team shown competitive pace which would eventually become a key factor given the changes that would be implemented on Saturday.

Saturday started with Qualifying 1. Track limits were, as usual in Valencia, a controversial issue. The entire grid got disqualified due to the recurrent infringements. The grid was therefore determined by the best times set during Friday testing. Douwe would start the race from P14, with Bianca in P24 and Lia in P30.

During the race, the Belgian driver was competitive while fighting for scoring points. Safety Car interruptions were numerous, and a red flag brought the race to an early end. Dedecker saw the chequered flag in 11th position while Bustamante climbed up to 23rd and Lia was 29th.

Sunday started the best possible way: Dedecker qualified on 3rd place for the final race. Both Bustamante and Block had also a good session despite their final positions bearing no relevance. They would both miss Race 3 due to F1 Academy testing taking place early next week.

Race 2 saw Douwe fighting in the middle of the pack and finishing in P14. Lia had a great race and claimed her best result on the championship so far as she crossed the finished line in 25th position. Bianca was forced to retire after being taken out by a rival.

The final race would be our best chance to achieve a good result. From 3rd on the grid, Dedecker defended his position perfectly, maintaining a competitive, consistent pace to finish the race on the podium, on third position. GRS was back in a Formula 4 podium after two difficult years. The whole team did an excellent job, and Douwe’s performance was brilliant. This result is a huge morale boost ahead of the season.

It was an emotional weekend, with ups-and-downs and a dream ending. Drivers shown remarkable improvement throughout the event, and the whole team gave its best so we all could reach our goals. Now, it is time to keep working so these results happen on a more regular basis.

We end another weekend, and the first half of the Formula Winter Series is now done and dusted. There is a one-week break for us before the championship resumes at MotorLand Aragón in March 2-3.
