First points of the season after a great performance at the Red Bull Ring

The second EuroCup-3 meeting of the year was held this weekend at the Red Bull Ring. The team raced for the first time on its history at the historical Austrian track on a weekend where our competitive pace was rewarded with some solid results.

After a chaotic start to the season in Spa-Francorchamps, where heavy rain fell all weekend long, EuroCup-3 season resumed at the Red Bull Ring, in Austria. Por GRS, it was its first race weekend at the Austrian circuit, one of the most iconic tracks in the World. It was a weekend to remember, in which the whole team was at its best to bring home our first points of the season.

The team came into the weekend with one change on its line-up. Emely De Heus raced alongside Isaac Barashi in Spielberg. The Dutch driver made her debut on the series as part of her racing programme of the year, where her second F1 Academy season is her main championship. Nikola Tsolov, who could not be racing with us due to his Formula 3 commitments, will be back on the next round.

The event started on Thursday with three testing sessions. The first one took place in wet conditions, while the rain was gone for the other two. Our drivers had quick pace in both conditions, with Barashi consistently lapping in Top 10 times, and De Heus showing fast adaptability to the series. Friday came and we had the same feeling over Free Practice sessions. Rain did not return, and both drivers lapped around the Top 15 throughout the day.

Qualifying sessions, held on Saturday, were the definitive confirmation. On the first one, which was very tight, Barashi achieved a sensational 12th position, less than one second behind Pole Position. De Heus did well as she qualified in 19th. On the second session, the British driver raised the bar even higher by qualifying in tenth place, only 8 tenths behind the leader. The Dutch driver had a tougher run as she was in P21.

Sunday was race day. The first one did not start out well. Both drivers lost a few places on the opening laps. Once they found their pace, they both started climbing up positions. Thanks to their speed, and their rivals’ incidents and penalties, they managed to get close to the Top 10. Eventually, Isaac was 11th and P2 on the Rookie Classification. Emely finished in P13.

On Race 2, Barashi managed to reach P7 at the start. Eventually, he found himself at the battle for the final points positions to end up seeing the chequered flag in eighth place. With this result, Barashi scored his first points in EuroCup-3, which also were the first for GRS in the ongoing season. The driver saw his efforts and his incredible improvement rewarded, and also took P3 on the Rookie Classification. De Heus made another strong comeback to end up in P17.

The weekend is done, and GRS leaves the Red Bull Ring with good feeling and confidence to face the rest of the season. The hard work paid off, with our drivers being fast and competitive every time they hit the track, and bringing home our first points this season. Undoubtedly, this is the way to go to keep achieving these results and to keep growing as a team. EuroCup-3 will return in June 7-9 at Autodromo do Algarve.
